The alleged UFO seen over Lafayette, Colo. (l.) and the one seen in southern California (r.).
"What sort of lights would float in the night sky, drift apart, and then fade away after a few minutes?" wrote LiveScience's Bad Science columnist, Benjamin Radford.
"Road flares tied to balloons."
Sound as improbable as a UFO? Todd Fassler doesn't think so.
The trickster carried off a prank like that in southern California in January 2010, using weather balloons and street flares.
"It is fun," he said at the time. "It gets everyone wondering what is going on."
The balloons float close together, forming a pattern as they are carried along by the wind. The flares appear to blink or flash as they sparkle and burn.
Many Colorado residents thought something a bit more exotic was going on when they spotted the dazzling light show in their skies."When it flew over, there was a really weird energy," said Grant Gazvoda, according to ABC News. "My mind started racing. My body started shaking... I freaked out at that point."Not everyone was in awe. "There's a lot of things you can't explain but the idea of it being an alien spacecraft is pretty wacky," Kevin Caron said.
